Bio note

Pedro Gomes is a researcher in the field of historical sociology, focusing on how leisure, sport and popular culture have influenced social life in colonial and post-colonial contexts, with a particular focus on Angola. In this context, his research examines the impact of transnational dynamics and class, racial and gender inequalities on urban life in Angola. He holds a PhD in Sociology and is currently a postdoctoral researcher at CICS.NOVA, where he is developing a project focused on the political and social transitions of sport in Luanda, from the end of the colonial period to the end of socialist rule, with particular attention to international cooperation and nation-building processes in the context of the Global Cold War. Previously, he was involved in several projects funded by FCT (on the history of Portuguese emigration; participatory democracy; popular culture in the Portuguese empire). He has consolidated experience in oral history and qualitative methods. Currently, in addition to exploring the political potential of sport, he is interested in the relationships between leisure, well-being and happiness.
