Bio note

Graduate in Law from the University of Lisbon, Sociologist, Doctorate cum laude from the University of Amsterdam in Social, Cultural and Political Sciences, former Director of the Centre for Social Sciences Research (2004-2014), former President of the Portuguese Sociological Association (APS) (2010-2012), he is a researcher at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Social Sciences (CICS.Nova), University of Minho. Retired professor at UMinho and visiting professor in Angola, Spain, Colombia and Brazil, he was an evaluator of social science courses in Portugal for the A3ES Agency (2010-2014), of applications for (post)doctoral scholarships (2004-2013), as well as of scientific production in social sciences at FCT/Portugal and ANVUR/Italy. Awarded the Sedas Nunes Prize for his work on the peasantry Resistir e Adaptar-se (Afrontamento, 1998), he co-organised several (inter)national conferences (Conglab, 2009; APS, 2012), coordinated several research projects and published, (co-)authored 34 books and around 200 book chapters and articles in (inter)national journals on rural-urban issues, development and social inequalities (class, ethnic-racial and gender).
