Bio note
Alison Laurie Neilson holds a BES in environmental studies, an MSc in ecology, and a PhD in comparative education for international development. She worked for the Ontario government as an environmental biologist and educator. She is from Canada, has worked in Africa, Central and South America, and moved to the Azores in 2008. She works on environmental justice in small-scale fishing communities. She uses narrative and artistic methods to transform the way knowledge, wisdom, and policy intermingle and to transcend the boundaries between arts/sciences, academic/non-academic, and researcher/researched. She conducts research on how sustainability is understood and used in ocean education and policy. She asks how scientists and educators ignore the knowledge and experience of people who spend their lives in the ocean. She examines how knowledge, wisdom, and policy intermingle. Dr. Neilson has worked with fishing and community organizations across the Azores. She is a contributor to several international networks for artistic/scientific engagement with the ocean.
