Alexandre Cotovio Martins holds a PhD in Sociology from the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. He is an Assistant Professor at the Higher School of Education and Social Sciences of the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre (ESEC-IPP) and a Researcher of the Interdisciplinary Center for Research and Innovation of the IPP (C3I-IPP). He is a researcher at the Interdisciplinary Center in the Social Sciences (CICS.NOVA) and at the Interdisciplinary Research Unit on Constructive Communities on Functional Aging (Age.Comm). He is Head of the Department of Social Sciences, Territory and Development and Vice-President of the Technical-Scientific Council of ESECS-IPP. He is Coordinator of the Master of Gerontology of IPP. In his research activity, he has been studying end of life processes in the context of palliative care. He has been a reviewer in a number of specialized journals in the fields of social sciences and health sciences, including publications indexed in Elsevier. He is an editor of the board of Cambridge Scholars Publishing.
