Precarity in academia is traditionally associated with problematic work conditions, including concerns regarding pay, uncertainty of tenure and limited access to welfare and other forms of support. In this presentation, we introduce an additional aspect of precarity that pertains to researchers working in higher education, namely a change in the definition of the workplace, including substitution of offices and laboratories by the domestic home as the main place of work, a process enabled by the use of digital technology. The opening part of our presentation looks at the evolution of precarity in academia, including the spread of job insecurity beyond the early career stage and reinforcement of the secondary position of many researchers in universities, related to the projectification of research careers. We illustrate this situation using examples from a study of 100 researchers in Portugal conducted in 2022 and 2023, highlighting implications arising from a bifurcation of the academic workforce. In the second part of the discussion, we examine findings of a websurvey conducted with 370 researchers in Portugal, including the extent to which they engage in remote and hybrid forms of working, and use online methods in their research practice. This is followed by explanation of how researchers use both the domestic home and the university campus to manage their workloads more effectively and cope with issues arising from challenging social and economic conditions in Portugal, drawing on findings from 36 interviews conducted in 2026. In the concluding section, we argue that the place of researchers in Portuguese academia is being transformed by technology, enabling people to make extensive use of the domestic home and the university campus to increase scientific productivity, in addition to responding to social and economic challenges, but at the risk of experiencing a specific form of precarity related to a loss of definition of the workplace. In addition to advantages related to heightened flexibility, we highlight concerns arising from this redefinition, including the need for more effective governance of remote working in higher education.
