Objectivos:

What possibilities and limitations for "transversal politics" are present in urban gardeners' mobilizations to claim space for growing food in the city? We examine how a coalition of Portuguese and immigrant gardeners is reclaiming land to grow vegetables and to re-grow community through “inclusive agriculture” that attempts to bridge ethnicity, socioeconomic class, disability, and age.  These activities and mobilizations are taking place against the political and institutional backdrop of Portugal’s "new urbanist" planning, public-private partnerships, non-profit grantmaking contingencies, and the “precarity” of work in the post-industrial service economy-all in a deep state of crisis since 2010. Our research is based on participatory research methods (Photovoice), interviews with gardeners from a range of organizations as well as an in-depth case study of a specific urban gardeners' association that is transforming illicit, "clandestine" garden spaces into a municipally approved "urban agricultural park" on the outskirts of the city.
